Pierre Basdevant, who graduated from the School of Political Science (ESP) and holds both an undergraduate and a postgraduate law degree, worked as an attaché in the office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1944, right before he embarked on a career in diplomacy and consular work in 1945.

He served as Deputy Consul in Bratislava, and was later posted to Washington from 1946 to 1953 where he served as Embassy Attaché, Second Secretary and First Secretary, consecutively.

Seconded to NATO from 1957 to 1961, he was Consul-General in San Francisco from 1961 to 1965 and then in Düsseldorf before becoming Director of Ofpra.
