A graduate of the National School for French Overseas Territories (ENFOM), Jean Brouste worked for the central administration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the Cultural and Technical Affairs Department from 1962 to 1964.

He joined the corps of foreign affairs counsellors and secretaries in 1964 and was posted to Ankara as Second and First Secretary from 1966 to 1970. He returned to central administration from 1970 to 1974 and was Second Counsellor in Bucharest from 1974 to 1978.

He was Deputy Director of the Directorate of French Nationals Abroad and Foreigners in France from 1978 to 1981.

He served as French Ambassador to Sierra Leone in 1981 before becoming Director of Ofpra.

He was appointed Director-General of the International Children's Centre in 1988, and then Ambassador of France to Zambia and Botswana in 1993.

He had been retired since 1995 and died in April 2021.
